I have just had my old soft contact lenses changed to soft toric lenses, because of my astigmatism. And the change is unbelievable. I think I am actually getting better vision from them than from my glasses.
So, how do they work to correct the astigmatism?

The lenses correct the twist imparted on light due to irregularity of the shape of the eye’s lens. They are slightly weighted on one edge to cause them always to sit with the weight downwards. This means that the lens can have different thickness around the eye and it will always be aligned correctly.
Well I have them for that too and my optician said cos the astigmatism means my eyes are rugby ball shape instead of rouns they pull your focus in so you are not seeing as wide – I think, oh i’m confused too!
contacts work better then glasses because it actually put on the eye…whereas with glasses u have to strain your eyes to see through lenses…
